There must be something in the sand of sweltering Palm Desert, a California town that has birthed Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age, as well as Fatso Jetson. Like Kyuss/QOTSA, Fatso Jetson built a name for themselves by putting their own unique spin on the Sabbath sound, but unlike their counterparts, larger than life singer/guitarist Mario Lalli's true love lies in both jazz (Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy) and experimental rock (Frank Zappa, Devo). On paper, this conglomeration of different styles sounds like the perfect recipe for a train wreck, but it somehow all comes together on disc, as evidenced by the trio's 2003 offering, Cruel & Delicious. Issued on old pal Josh Homme's label, Rekords Rekords, the trippy songs perfectly fit the feel of the album's cover (a sun-bleached photo of a long stretch of desert highway), especially such standouts as the saxophone free for all "Drinkin Mode," the melodic "Light Yourself on Fire," the bouncy instrumental "Heavenly Hearse," a barely recognizable cover of the Devo obscurity, "Ton O Luv," and the jazzoid freak-out, "Pig Hat Smokin." Cruel & Delicious is an enjoyable slice of hard rock, well off the beaten path.

I'm the son I'm the average son Loyal and loved Head up my ass Gimme the freedom Ooh! The pressure it sees Don't need a reason Gonna do what I please Don't tell me away And don't cut me loose I need the strength Of the family rule And I feel a shame When you work so hard Yeah I feel a shame When I see you work so hard I'm the man I'm the average man King of the castle Keeper of trust I'm the father And I'm true to the form Son and the daughter Yeah they got a good home Loyal and loved With the zone box on I've got to unload Been married ten years More good then bad And I'm not afraid To stay the course No I'm not afraid I'm the son I'm the average son I'm the man I'm the average man I'm the son I'm the average son I'm the man I'm the average man Average man

I'm making ugly faces while I'm sleeping in my tomb Light myself on fire and I fly around the room I should sing of drunken monsters while your ears are to the wall Saying something spiteful just to get you in the hall Light myself on fire and I fly around the room Light myself on fire and I fly around the room Light myself on fire and I fly around the room Light myself on fire and I fly around the room But you can't blame me 'Cause I've been listening Let us not forget You're the reason I'm here I do it all for you And I'll stay near 'Cause you're the reason I'm here I can't stop you lying while you plan your disease And I can't stop the burning when the house begins to freeze I'll settle the destruction when its underneath your sea And I don't hear the answer, it's not blowin' in the breeze Light myself on fire and I fly around the room Light myself on fire and I fly around the room Light myself on fire and I fly around the room Light myself on fire and I fly around the room But you can't blame me 'Cause I've been listening Let us not forget You're the reason I'm here I do it all for you I'll stay near You're the reason I'm here

he lived in California He was born a wild man He laid the bullshit on you He played his only hand He told his only story The one about the girl The girl in California The way she left the world She was a hopeless whore She was the empty kind The way she came to town The town that blew her mind She fell right through the floor She fell with confidence Nobody loved her more Her time was surely spare She died in California Through a fire to the head She laid there staring at the ceiling Can't stop the bleeding with her grin Didn't mean to squeeze the trigger Didn't want to watch her die Died in California What a beautiful place to die She was a hopeless whore She was the empty kind The way she came to town The town that blew her mind She fell right through the floor She fell with confidence Nobody loved her more Her time was sure to spend

Ton O' Luv 02:28
When love takes a back seat to life When a man runs away from his wife That's when you know he's in the world When a guy tries to round up his mate But she's gone and it's gettin' too late That's when you know he's lost his girl So it happens all the time Don't get low, just stand in line Now take your turn, and make your move And crush that girl with a ton o' luv When a woman takes a back seat to man Gotta tell him where to go if she can And she decides to wear his ring So it happens all the time Don't get low, just stand in line Take your turn Now make your move And crush that girl with a ton o' luv Time to go with the face of a clock Hands move forward 'til you can't stop She comes from above With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv With a ton o' luv

Superfrown 04:25
Yeah, thought I'd be the king to crown But I'm just another clown Yeah, thought I'd be the king to crown But I'm just another clown Yes, just another clown, Need a circus just to hide the frown Now, if you look around, I've become the superfrown Yeah, thought I'd be the one to save Save you from the slip n slide Yeah, thought I'd be the one to save Save you from the slip n slide Now, if you look around I'm the one that needs a ride Yeah, just another clown Need a circus just the hide the frown Now, if you look around I've become the superfrown

I've waited this moment To look in your eyes Put my hands on your sweet neck And squeeze out the life Living without you I paid quite a price But to live without the torment Of your cheating and lies Living life without your love Is a life without your pain Livin life in the numbness Of a prison yard chain. If she wore a scarlett letter I could let her live on But not in this house And not in this song I know that forgiveness Is the way of the lord I guess I'll forgive her When she's dead on the floor. Living life without your love Is a life without your pain Livin life in the numbness Of a prison yard chain. One man wants a woman Who will cook and will clean And them man get a woman She is hateful and mean And this man needs a woman Who will stand by his side While the shame in his life Had swayed his Pride Living life without your love Is a life without your pain Livin life in the numbness Of a prison yard chain. Living life without your love Is a life without your pain Livin life in the numbness Of a prison yard chain. Livin life in the numbness Of a prison yard chain. Livin life in the numbness Of a prison yard chain
